SYNOPSIS: It’s the age of artificial intelligence, and 85-year-old Marjorie – grappling with a jumble of disparate, fading memories – has a handsome new companion who’s programmed to feed the story of her life back to her. What would we remember—and what would we forget—if given the chance? In this richly spare, wondrous new play, Jordan Harrison explores the mysteries of human identity and the limits – if any – of what technology can replace.
MARJORIE PRIME CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Seeking two women and two men.
MARJORIE (Female, 70s-80s)
Sharp and sardonic, despite her recent challenges with dementia. She relies on the Prime of her late husband Walter for companionship. While she tends to be clear-eyed and unsentimental, Marjorie is still marked by life’s losses. She and her daughter Tess have a prickly relationship.
WALTER (Male, 30s)
Marjorie's late husband, an AI entity called a Prime. He appears to be in his mid 30s, as Marjorie remembers him. He is warm, charming, idealistic, and a good listener. He learns quickly.
TESS (Female, 50s)
Marjorie’s daughter. Skeptical, smart, well-read. A worrier. Judgmental, of herself most of all. Shares caregiving duties with her husband Jon. Despite her best intentions, she falls into a kind of bickering loop with her mom. Battling depression, but not without humor. Fragile but forceful.
JON (Male, 50s)
Tess’s husband, Marjorie’s son-in-law. He married up when he married Tess. A freewheeling hippie in his youth, he’s now settled into his role as husband, father, and caretaker of Marjorie. Caring, good humored, and tolerant. Thinks more of others than himself. Is trying to heal Tess & Marjorie’s family dysfunction.
